LANA Meeting Tonight 01/11/16!

Reminder: the first LANA meeting of the new year is this evening.

Monday, January 11, 2016, 7:30 pm

Longfellow House, 885 South Street, Roslindale

On the agenda are presentations from Green T Coffee, coming to the corner of South Street and Walter Street. Also, a presentation from Renew Boston about energy and cost saving programs available from the city. The LANA board has updates on our ongoing pedestrian safety efforts in the neighborhood and other happenings. Please join us!

Winter Reminders

With winter finally upon us, here are some helpful reminders and links from the City of Boston:

  • Property owners are responsible per city ordinance for shoveling sidewalks abutting their property. Sidewalks must be cleared within 3 hours of snowfall ending or 3 hours after sunrise if it snows overnight. Clear at least a 42-inch wide path for wheelchairs and strollers. Please be a good neighbor and take care of your sidewalks. The city will fine non-complying property owners.
  • Keep an eye on neighbors that might need assistance with snow removal or getting around. Any residents who need assistance can reach out to LANA as well.
  • Please remember to clear out nearby fire hydrants and catch basins following snowfall. Consider adopting a hydrant for the winter.
  • Sign up for snow emergency alerts from the City of Boston including information about any parking bans on major arteries.
  • Submit issues with snow removal or plowing to the City of Boston 311 service. You can call 311 or use the 311 app on a smartphone (which is a great tool).

Follow LANA on our Facebook page for real-time updates on any snow issues as well.

Let’s all hope this is a milder winter than the last one! Have a Happy New Year and thanks for helping to make our neighborhood so great!

Walter-Bussey Intersection Plans

Next year, the City of Boston will re-configure the Walter-Bussey Street intersection by the Arboretum. This plan has been in the works for the last few years. This re-configuration will bring safer pedestrian access to the intersection and will include curb bump outs to slow traffic at those turns and a dedicated left turn lane on Walter St. The city is putting in the underground infrastructure for traffic lights but will not install the actual traffic signals until they analyze the traffic patterns following construction completion.

You can view the planned design here: Walter & Bussey Plan.

Thanks to Councilor Tim McCarthy’s office for providing the design to LANA and their advocacy. Thanks also go out to Councilor Matt O’Malley’s office for their involvement and especially former Councilor Rob Consalvo who worked on this issue for years.

Please note this Walter-Bussey re-configuration is separate from any plans by the state Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) for the Walter-Centre intersection, which is managed by the state. LANA has requested that DCR coordinate with the city in their planning.

Lastly, LANA continues to work with the city and Councilors McCarthy and O’Malley for the entirety of Walter Street and also South Street. Both streets suffer from rampant speeding and lack sufficient safe crossing points. LANA is hoping to see speed radar signs that display vehicle speeds, pedestrian crossing lights, and other measures to make the streets safer. We will keep the neighborhood posted as we work on these issues.

DCR Centre Street Meeting Nov. 10

State Senator Mike Rush and State Representatives Ed Coppinger and Jeffrey Sanchez in conjunction with the state Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) are hosting a community meeting specific for Roslindale residents about the proposed DCR plans for the Centre Street corridor from VFW Parkway to Murray Circle, and in particular the Walter/Centre intersection.

Tuesday, Nov. 10

6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

St. Nectarios Church Hall, 39 Belgrade Ave, Roslindale

DCR has previously held three meetings on proposals for this stretch of Centre Street, in addition to the Arborway in Jamaica Plain. You can view the presentations from past meetings here. The meeting and presentation materials specific to the Centre Street corridor and Walter Street intersection can be found there under the Oct. 7, 2015 meeting information.

LANA has advocated for years for changes to this intersection and had members present at the prior meetings. In addition to this Nov. 10 meeting, at our normal bimonthly LANA meeting the night prior, Monday, Nov. 9, 7:30 pm at Longfellow House, we’ll be joined by Sen. Rush and Reps. Coppinger and Sanchez to go over these plans and discuss issues around them along with other relevant state issues. We hope you can join us.
