Upcoming Classes at the Arnold Arboretum
The Arnold Arboretum now offers classes at its new Weld Hill Research Building, adjacent to the Longfellow Area. On Wednesday, August 10, the arboretum will present a free session (registration is required) on the topic of sustainable gardening.
Iñaki Hormaza, Arnold Arboretum Research Associate and Professor, Mayora Research Station of the Spanish Council for Scientific Research, will be discussing the cherimoya, a potentially sustainable fruit tree originating in the Andes, and his project which unites conservation, research, and production methods. In Central America, the cherimoya is called the Anona and in English speaking countries it is sometimes referred to as the “custard apple” or “sugar apple.” It should be a wonderful evening linking research to the lives of small scale farmers in Central and South America.
From Genomics to Small Scale Agriculture: Tale of the Cherimoya, an Ancient New Crop
Iñaki Hormaza, Arnold Arboretum Research Associate and Professor, Mayora Research Station of the Spanish Council for Scientific Research
Wed Aug 10, 7:00–8:30pm [Weld Hill, 1300 Centre Street, Boston] Free, registration requested
The cherimoya, a fruit tree originating in the Andes, holds potential as a sustainable crop for the countries of that region and beyond. A wealth of genetic diversity, excellent organoleptic qualities (sensory food appeal), and high nutrition content make this fruit a potential component of Andean food security. Iñaki Hormaza, a visiting plant biologist at the Arboretum, is coordinating a project to capitalize on the species’ potential and will talk about his work that unites conservation, research, and production methods.
Please refer to the arboretum’s online calendar for more events, many of which are offered at Weld Hill.

Boston Park updates (mtg. 1/19) – plus upcoming Franklin Park Events
The Boston Park Advocates network that organized the city council candidates’ debate last fall is moving forward on citywide parks advocacy. It would be great to have Franklin Park users involved – or if you care about a smaller park, community garden, schoolyard, or urban wild in your neighborhood – please join us! :ere’s the next meeting – on park maintenance:
Park Maintenance Meeting with the Commissioner
Tuesday, January 19th 6:30-8:30pm at the Copley Library – enter on the Dartmouth Street side directly across from Copley Square. Join Boston Park Commissioner, Toni Pollak, and DCR Urban Parks Director, Samantha Overton Bussell, to ask your questions about park maintenance. We’ve asked them to bring information about maintenance standards and schedules for parks. One goal is to see if the two park systems in Boston – city and DCR – can adopt some of the same standards and procedures.
Coming up in Franklin Park
Winter Volunteer Day – Saturday, January 30th 10am-Noon. Clear vines that are killing native oaks – you’ll be liberating trees! Wear layers and leave shiny nylon parkas at home, they can be torn by branches and thorns. Gloves with a leather palm or glove liners are helpful, we’ll have work gloves for all who need them – and plenty of hot chocolate! Meet at Valley Gates, midway along the main park road.
Snow Festival – Saturday, February 13th 1-4pm. Come sled, make snowpeople, hunt for animal tracks with the Boston Nature Center, borrow snowshoes to try, or bring your own skis for a tour of the park. Hot chocolate and board games inside to warm up. All Ages Welcome! Meet at the Golf Clubhouse.
Join the Franklin Park Ski & Snowshoe Club on facebook – and look for the Franklin Park Coalition on facebook (join the group or become a fan) and follow us on twitter.
